How is this ranking made?

One figure is read for each of the places and towns with 10,000 or more residents in 2020 and a 2025 estimate: the residents per square mile of land, July 2025. The Census Bureau publishes these estimates without a margin of error, so every place in the set is ranked. Equal published figures share a rank. A ranking measures one number; it is not a judgment of a place.

Towns and townships are ranked beside cities, villages and census-designated places, and a census-designated place can lie inside a township, so one area can appear twice, once as each.

Across the 100 places shown, the residents per square mile of land, July 2025 runs from 10,460 (Alhambra, CA) to 61,710 (Guttenberg, NJ); the middle place on the list stands at 13,044.
