According to the U.S. Census Bureau, these rankings draw on the Building Permits Survey (BPS) data released in February 2025, which recorded 879,610 residential permits across the cities tracked here in 2024 alone. Figures cover annual permits authorized for new housing units from 2019 to 2024 — see our methodology for the full pipeline and source vintage.

Single-family: detached one-family houses. Multifamily: buildings with 2+ units (apartments, condos, townhomes). The 5-year trend measures % change from 2019 to 2024.
